Flanked by the Sea of Cortez, or Gulf of California, and the Pacific Ocean, the Antigua or Baja California was a region inhabited by indigenous groups that left behind manifestations of their hunting-gathering lifestyle. On the arrival of Europeans, interesting processes of acculturation occurred. These processes were in turn the result of the interaction between both parts that took place from the third decade of the eighteenth century on. The geographic and climatic conditions, together with the cultural exchange, contributed to the slow and gradual flourishing of forms of organization that constitute Maria Teresa Uriarte’s object of study. She, by attempting to analyse them and explain them to the reader, provides suggesting proposals. The specialist’s reflections show her deep knowledge on the topics here developed, which are the result not only of her research per se, but also of the diligent revision of the critical apparatus.
