Martin Luther, the XVI Century German religious reformer, has represented a disquieting figure for the Mexican conscience, especially in the colonial era at a time when in Europe it was thought that the New World was Paradise. But, how to warn against Luther's presence in environments with which they had no direct relationship and in which Luther's work never circulated? Despite an apparent distance and the absence of a large Protestant nucleus in these lands, his figure was the inescapable referent of a large-scale production of historic works, sermons, inquisitorial documents, and even artistic manifestations. Lutero en el Paraíso places theology in American lands, inquires into the why and how of his presence in New Spain, and analyzes the imprint left in New Spain by the religious proposal of this "incorrigible heretic" for some, this "paladin (or chivalrous knight) of freedom of the spirit" for others. In a general fashion and covering a gap in Mexican historiography, this work offers a panorama of the image created around Luther during the three centuries of colonialism. In parallel, it studies the perception that the Novohispanic had of him/herself and his/her attitude in the face of the values sown by Protestantism and by the Europe broken by the schism caused by the great German theologian.
