Alicia Mayer delves deeply into the Reform-Counter-Reformation conflict outside of European confines and within the American colonial ambit of the 17th and 18th Centuries. The ideological struggle between Protestantism and Catholicism that arose in the 16th century brought to bear interesting manifestations on our continent. Many of these are approached herein by means of the contribution to historic thought of two distinctive figures of the era: the mexican Carlos de Sigüenza y Góngora, immersed in the currents of the Novohispanic counter-reformation world, and Bostonian Cotton Mather, a representative of the Anglo-Puritan mode of reformed heresy. The present study rescues the contribution of these two men by means of a substantial and similar coverage by both authors. The coherence of the work is reflected, in the last instance, in the profound and careful manner about which these two american authors have been thought in equilibrated terms. Categories such as modernity and missionism, as well as religiosity and the sense of historic thought of the time, are analyzed. In addition, considerations are postulated on the nascent criollism in the colonial era, the ethos of the baroque, the puritan and catholic world views, the image of the Indian, the idea of America, scientific reflections, and other themes examined in the light of the similarities and differences found in the historic interpretations of Sigüenza y Góngora and Mather.
