During the creation of the Mexican State in the first half of the nineteenth century, the idea that a monarchy was the solution to the national-organization problem was still valid despite the lack of success of the First Empire. The triumph of republicanism is all the more relevant if one considers the full dimension of the Mexican monarchism. This work analyses Maximilian’s attempts to join the monarchy to the Liberal Reform, two conflicting concepts in the Mexican tradition, which associated the monarchical system with conservative ideas. The attempt to institute a third reform from the perspective of a Catholic monarchy represented a new impact of the European liberalism in Mexico. In the carrying out of this research, documentary, journalistic, and bibliographical sources were consulted. From the first sources, it stands out the study of Maximilian’s correspondence, which is preserved in both Mexican and European archives. It was also consulted the large amount of pamphlets concerning the controversy about the imperial authorities and the members of the Mexican clergy.
